Summer Institute - Classroom Instruction That Works: Research Based Techniques
As a follow-up to the NHASCD conference by Robert Marzano held this spring Beatrice McGarvey (a Senior Research Associate from the Marzano Institute) presented a two-day summer institute on Classroom Instruction that Works. This institute covered five chapters from Marzano’s The Art and Science of Teaching. Over 130 participants attended and were struck by the power of the presentation. Some of the instructional concepts in the book (which is a compilation of Marzano’s work over the past several decades) were familiar to the attendees; however, much of the new work on grading, assessment, and rubrics was completely novel and provided an opportunity for deep reflection about common practices which have not be questioned in the past. The program was an intense two-day experience as McGarvey used techniques from the book to focus the participants on the problems and their solutions.
